“Quasars in the Epoch of Reionization"

Quasars are the most luminous, non-transient sources in the universe. Their strong emission allows us to probe their supermassive black hole (SMBH), their host galaxy and the intergalactic medium during the Epoch of Reionization, when the Universe was only ~900 million years old. Over the last five years the number of known quasars at z>6 has more than doubled, allowing the first statistical analysis of quasars at this epoch. In addition, there are now 5 quasars at z>7, with the most distant discovered quasar at z=7.54. I will present the recent results of quasar searches at the highest redshifts, discuss their implications for reionization and SMBH evolution, and highlight studies of their galaxy hosts. At last, I will summarize our on-going efforts at
MPIA.
